Dr. Amit Lopes

Summary:

Amit Lopes has over 10 years of experience in areas of advanced manufacturing and operations. His education and work experience are focused on the design, development, production, and operations of a variety of manufacturing products. He brings an end-to-end systems perspective to product development and process engineering and is able to utilize his education and experience for problem solving and process improvement across a variety of industry projects.

Areas of Expertise:

Amit is an Engineer with extensive knowledge of diverse Manufacturing, Process, and Systems Engineering methodologies. He is an expert in technical skills needed for utilization of additive manufacturing (AM) systems to realize novel applications. He has vast experienced in Process Engineering, Lean Manufacturing, Project Management, and Engineering Operations across a variety of Industries. He is an excellent team player and self-starter with demonstrated leadership, interpersonal and communication skills.

Scope of Experience:

In his current capacity as Regional Director for TMAC Paso Del Norte at The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), Amit contributes to the growth of TMAC by identifying and implementing opportunities, particularly cross-regionally, to expand operations that deliver impactful services to companies leading to improved NIST MEP metrics. In collaboration with TMAC staff, he is in charge of developing, implementing, and updating the business model and sales plans, including the establishment and evaluation of revenue generating partnerships, sales processes, training plans, and individual goals for staff. He also actively pursues and responds to grant proposals to government and industry funding agencies to conduct TMAC industry projects and promote IMSE research. He evaluates relevant software tools to help improve course curriculum and teaching effectiveness in IMSE department.

During his Ph.D. program, Amit developed a hybrid stereolithography (SL) with direct print (DP) machine with an objective to fabricate complex 3D electronics products for specialized end-use applications. He collaborated with Sandia National Laboratories and nScrypt Inc. to develop functional embedded electronic systems for unique security and defense related applications.

As a Process Engineer for the DAO Process Engineering Group at Dell Inc. in Winston Salem, NC, Amit led the development of a materials planning/stocking tool for newly installed lean manufacturing lines. He analyzed relevant data for optimizing the line balancing in the conventional ‘Boxing’ using DMAIC principles. Amit assisted the lead process engineer in the installation of Lean manufacturing assembly lines demonstrating ability to handle ambiguity and realizing desired results through effective communication skills.

Relevant Assignments:

Amit has delivered several TMAC projects across a broad range of industries. He has worked with local Chambers of Commerce to better position TMAC to changes regional market conditions. He has engaged with regional economic and workforce development entities to understand technology and workforce gaps to develop and implement programs that will address those gaps. He has successfully executed projects in Process Engineering, Lean Training and Implementation, New Technology Implementation, and New Product Development.

Education and Training:

Amit received his Bachelor of Engineering in Production Engineering from The University of Mumbai, India in 2001. In 2003, he completed his Master of Science in Industrial Engineering at The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). He then went on to get his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering in 2010, also from The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP).

  • Certified in ‘Teaching Online’ and ‘Moodle’ by the Teaching Online Academy at Academic Technologies in UTEP
